Padel in the Algarve: An Explosive Sport

Padel has become a phenomenon in the Algarve. From Vilamoura to Quinta do Lago, from Loulé to Almancil, courts are full and new clubs are opening regularly. It is easy to see why — it is social, accessible, and enormous fun.

But with the explosive growth of padel has come a surge in injuries. At Muscle Therapy Algarve, we are treating an increasing number of padel players with a characteristic range of problems. Here is what you need to know.

The Most Common Padel Injuries

Padel is a fast racket sport that combines explosive movements, rapid changes of direction, and repetitive striking. The most common injuries we see include:

  • Lateral epicondylitis (padel elbow) — pain on the outer side of the elbow caused by repetitive swinging movements
  • Rotator cuff injuries — shoulder pain and weakness from repeated overhead shots and serving movements
  • Patellar tendinitis — knee pain from explosive stops and starts
  • Lower back pain — from rotational movements and a hunched playing posture
  • Achilles tendinitis — from rapid lateral movements and explosive sprinting

Why Sports Massage Is Particularly Effective for Padel Players

Most padel injuries are not acute injuries — they are overuse conditions that develop over time. This means the soft tissues — muscles, tendons, fascia — accumulate tension, adhesions, and trigger points that reduce performance and cause pain.

At Muscle Therapy Algarve, we use a combination of:

  • Active Release Technique (ART)® — particularly effective for epicondylitis and rotator cuff injuries
  • Trigger Point Therapy — to deactivate the specific points causing referred pain in the elbow, shoulder, and knee
  • Myofascial Release — to address restrictions in the connective tissue that limit range of motion
  • Deep Tissue Massage — to release chronic muscle tension in the forearms, shoulders, and hips

When to Seek Treatment

Do not wait until pain forces you off the court. If you notice any persistent pain or stiffness after playing, that is your body's signal that something needs attention. Early treatment is always faster and more effective than waiting until a minor issue becomes chronic.

We also offer mobile massage across the Algarve — so if you are in Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, or Vale do Lobo, we can come to you. Call 925 382 490 or message us on WhatsApp to book your session.
