How Many Massage Sessions Will I Need?
The short answer
For most soft tissue problems, three to five sessions is the usual range, with something noticeable happening in the first one or two. If nothing has changed after three sessions, the plan is wrong and I will tell you so rather than book you in for a fourth.
Why nobody can give you an exact number up front
Two people arrive with the same complaint and need different amounts of work. A stiff shoulder that started three weeks ago after a tennis trip behaves differently from one that has been there since 2019. How long it has been going on is the single biggest factor, followed by what you do between sessions and whether the thing that caused it is still happening every day.
I can give you a far better estimate after one session than before one, because by then I have seen how your tissue responds. That is the honest version.
Rough guide by situation
- Recent and specific. A tight calf after a race, a stiff neck from sleeping badly, something that started in the last few weeks. Often one to two sessions.
- Recurring and familiar. The back that goes every few months, the shoulder that flares when you play more. Usually three to five, then occasional maintenance.
- Long standing. Pain you have had for years, often with other treatment already tried. Expect five or more, with the first few spent working out which restriction is actually driving it.
- Performance and prevention. No pain, you just want to keep training. Every two to four weeks depending on load.
What should happen by session three
Something measurable. More range of movement, pain that is less intense, pain that arrives later in a round or a run, or a sore area that has moved and shrunk. It does not have to be gone. It has to be different.
If three sessions have produced nothing at all, more of the same is not the answer. That usually means one of three things: the problem is not primarily soft tissue, something in your daily routine is undoing the work faster than I can do it, or it needs a different practitioner. In that case I would rather refer you on than keep taking your money.
How often to book
Early on, roughly a week apart. Close enough that the sessions build on each other, far enough apart that tissue has time to settle and I can see what actually held. Once things improve, the gap stretches to two or three weeks, then to maintenance if you want it.
Booking twice in one week is occasionally useful for an acute problem or someone here on a short trip. It is rarely the fastest route for a chronic one.
Session length
Thirty minutes works for one specific area you have seen me about before. Forty five is the usual choice for a single complaint with a bit of assessment. An hour is right for a first visit, for anything long standing, or when there is more than one thing going on. For a first appointment I would generally suggest the hour, because most of the value in session one is working out what is actually going on.
