Living with Chronic Pain in the Algarve? There Is Hope.
You Are Not Alone
If you are living with chronic pain in the Algarve — whether it's persistent back pain, neck stiffness, shoulder ache, or pain that seems to move around your body — you are far from alone. Chronic pain affects millions of people worldwide, and for many, it becomes a defining feature of daily life. But it doesn't have to be.
Why Chronic Pain Is So Difficult to Treat
Chronic pain is complex. Unlike acute pain, which is a direct signal of injury, chronic pain often persists long after the original injury has healed. The nervous system becomes sensitised, muscles develop compensatory patterns, and fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds every muscle and organ — can become restricted and thickened.
This is why standard treatments often fall short. A painkiller can mask the sensation, but it cannot address the underlying mechanical dysfunction. Physiotherapy exercises can help, but if the soft tissue restrictions are not released first, the exercises may be working against a body that is not yet ready to move freely.
A Different Approach for Chronic Pain Sufferers in Loulé, Almancil, and the Algarve
At Muscle Therapy Algarve, we take a different approach. Rather than treating the area where you feel pain, we work to identify where the pain is coming from. This is often not the same place.
For example, chronic lower back pain is frequently caused by tight hip flexors, restricted thoracic mobility, or trigger points in the gluteal muscles — not a problem in the back itself. Neck pain can originate from restrictions in the upper back or even the shoulders.
Using a combination of:
- Active Release Technique (ART)® — to release adhesions and restrictions in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves
- Myofascial Release — to address restrictions in the connective tissue
- Trigger Point Therapy — to deactivate the specific points that are causing referred pain
- Deep Tissue Massage — to release chronic muscle tension
...we work systematically to restore normal function to your body.
What to Expect: Chronic Pain Treatment at Our Almancil Clinic
Your first session begins with a thorough consultation. We want to understand your full history — not just where it hurts today, but when it started, what makes it better or worse, what treatments you have tried, and what your goals are.
We then carry out a postural and movement assessment to identify any imbalances or restrictions that may be contributing to your pain. Only then do we begin treatment — and every session is tailored specifically to you.
Many clients with chronic pain notice a significant difference after just two or three sessions. For long-standing conditions, a course of treatment may be required, but we will always be honest with you about what to expect and how long it is likely to take.
