Deep tissue does not mean as hard as the therapist can push. It means working slowly enough that the deeper layers actually release instead of bracing against you. Pressure without patience just makes people sore.
Alex is a Remedial Massage Therapist with a Sports Science degree who trained in Sydney. He uses depth where the tissue warrants it and backs off where it does not, which is the difference between a session that helps and one you regret the next day.
For most people deep tissue is one part of the session rather than the whole hour. It usually sits alongside trigger point work or ART® on whatever the assessment turned up.

What deep tissue massage is for
Where firmer, slower work on the deeper layers tends to earn its place.
- Chronic neck and upper back tension
- Lower back tightness
- Shoulder and trapezius knots
- Tension from manual work or heavy lifting
- Stiffness from long periods at a desk
- Tight calves, quads and hamstrings from training
- General heaviness and restricted movement
What a session involves
Warming the tissue
Deeper work on cold tissue does not release, it defends. The first part of the session prepares the area so the depth can actually do something.
Working the layers
Slower strokes and sustained pressure through the deeper muscle and connective tissue, with feedback from you throughout. Firm, not brutal.
Settling and advice
Lighter work to finish, then what to do afterwards: water, movement, and what to expect over the next day or two.
What it costs
Clinic sessions in Almancil. Mobile massage across the Algarve is €140 per hour.
For a first appointment I would usually suggest the hour, because most of the value in session one is working out what is actually going on. Payment by cash or card at the clinic.
Book on WhatsAppCommon questions
Does deep tissue have to be painful?
No. It should feel like strong, tolerable pressure you can breathe through. Pain makes muscles guard, which works against the treatment. Tell me and I adjust.
Will I be sore the next day?
Often mildly, for 24 to 48 hours, similar to after a hard gym session. Water and gentle movement help. Significant pain is not normal, so tell me if that happens.
Is deep tissue the same as sports massage?
No, though they overlap. Deep tissue describes the depth of the work. Sports massage describes the purpose, and is organised around a sport and its demands.
How long should I book?
45 minutes for one area, an hour if there is more than one or if it is the first visit. Thirty minutes works for a single area we have treated before.
Can I have it if I am pregnant?
Not deep tissue in the usual sense. Alex holds a Certificate of Pregnancy Massage, so mention it when you book and the session will be adapted.
