Remedial Massage in Almancil, Algarve
Remedial massage in Almancil, Algarve with Alex Cabrita, who trained in Sydney where remedial massage is part of the national health system. The job is to find where your pain actually comes from, which is often not where you feel it, and treat that instead.

Remedial massage is clinical work. It starts with an assessment, it follows the pain back to its source, and it treats the cause rather than the area that is complaining. A tight hip causing lower back pain. A restricted shoulder causing neck pain. Treating the sore spot alone is why so many people end up back where they started.
Alex trained at the NSW School of Massage in Sydney, where remedial massage sits inside the health system and the training standards are among the most rigorous anywhere. He graduated top of his class and spent years working alongside physiotherapists and sports medicine doctors before returning to Almancil.
If you have already tried physiotherapy, chiropractic or general massage without lasting change, that history is useful rather than discouraging. It usually narrows down where the real restriction is.

What a session involves
Consultation and assessment
Your history, what makes it better or worse, what you have already tried, then a postural and movement assessment. The first session is as much about working out the problem as treating it.
Treatment
Remedial massage as the foundation, combined with trigger point therapy, myofascial release or ART® depending on what the assessment found. It can be gentle or firm; depth is chosen for the tissue, not for effect.
A plan
An honest view of how many sessions this is likely to take and what you need to change between them. If massage is not the right answer, I will say so and point you elsewhere.
What it costs
Clinic sessions in Almancil. Mobile massage across the Algarve is €140 per hour.
For a first appointment I would usually suggest the hour, because most of the value in session one is working out what is actually going on. Payment by cash or card at the clinic.

What is the difference between remedial and relaxation massage?
A relaxation massage is designed to feel good. Remedial massage is designed to change something. It involves assessment, it targets specific tissue, and it works from a plan rather than a routine.
How many sessions will I need?
Three to five is the usual range, with something noticeable in the first one or two. Recent problems often take one or two. Pain you have had for years takes longer. If nothing has changed after three sessions, the plan is wrong and I will tell you.
Will it hurt?
Parts of it can be uncomfortable, but it should always be within what you can breathe through. Tell me and I adjust. Some tenderness for 24 to 48 hours afterwards is normal.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing you can move in. You will be covered with towels throughout and only the area being worked on is uncovered.
Do you treat people who are not in pain?
Yes. Plenty of people come for maintenance, particularly during a heavy training block or a busy playing season. Every two to four weeks is typical.
